Delhi has been the center of power for most Muslim dynasties that ruled from the 12th century onwards.

Delhi is divided into two parts—Old Delhi and New Delhi. Of them Old Delhi, built in the 17th century by the Mughal emperor Shah Jahan, which is crammed with narrow streets that surround the Red Fort's imposing walls. This area is well known for the architectural beauty of the Mughal Empire.

DTC Holiday Excursion Ticket

DTC issues holiday excursion tickets on SATURDAY, SUNDAY & HOLIDAYS . One can purchase the ticket which will be valid for travelling in DTC buses through out the day. For ordinary buses, the fare are Rs. 20/- only. However for all city buses including GREEN LINE but excluding PALAM COACH & TOURIST, the fare are Rs. 25/- only.

DTC daily operates Sight Seeing Tours from Scindia House. The fare of the first tour as well as second tour are Rs. 50/- each. However the fare of combined tour are Rs. 100/-. The detailed Tour programme is given hereunder :-

1st. Tour is conducted from 0930 hrs. to 1315 hrs. The details of the tour is given hereunder:-

a. LAXAMI NARAIN MANDIR (Birla Mandir) 30 Mts
b. GANDHI SAMRITI 30 Mts.
c. QUTUB MINAR 30 Mts
d. BAHAI MANDIR (Lotus Tample) 30 Mts (close on Monday)
e. HAMAUAN KA MAKBARA 30 Mts.

ROUTE TO BE FOLLOWED : -

GURDWARA BANGLA SAHIB => AKASH VANI BHAWAN => RASHTRAPATI BHAWAN => INDRA GANDHI SAMRITI => TEEN MURTI BHAWAN => DUTAVASIYA AREA => INDIA GATE Etc.

(b) 2nd Tour is conducted between 1400 hrs. to 1730 hrs. The details of the Tour is given hereunder:

Control Room/Complaint Cell/Lost Property Section

A) DTC is having Central Control Room at Pragati Maidan which comprises of Central Complaint Cell (Ph.3371587, 3371763). Besides, there is complaint cell in Vasant Vihar Depot (Ph.6154222).

Delhi Travel Tips

Some Delhi travel from my side. I hope these tips will help you your trip to the capital city much more. Just like every coin, the city also has two sides, one positive and one negative. To balance these two sides, you will be needing some dos and don't for Delhi travel. I am sharing with you some safety guidelines for Delhi, India, which I have followed during MY first visit:

Get all your bookings like hotel, travel, etc done in advance, before coming to Delhi. Also, make sure to check that the bookings are confirmed and in order.
Try to visit Delhi during the period of Feb-March and Sept-Nov. If you are planning to visiting this city some other month, you will be facing either extremely hot or extremely cold weather.
Beware of touts and agents when you go out for shopping and exercise discretion.
Except for the malls, upmarket areas and big showrooms, bargaining is prevalent everywhere. So, don't be shy to apply your bargaining Skills.
Keep your purses and wallets safely, especially while moving around in crowded places or in public transport.
The best person to consult in case you have got lost is the traffic policeman in complete white dress standing at the road intersections.
Take advice from the PCR vans parked nearby.
It is advisable to be a little conversant in Hindi. Try to carry a phrase book or phrase list with you all the time.
The female travelers should dress according to the area they are visiting in Delhi.

Saddi Delhi doesn’t have that extensive coffee house culture, as one can find in Kolkata or southern part of India. But with the Baristas, CCDS etc, city has undergone a major change. Delhi Tourism to set up designer coffee homes to retain the coffee home nostalgia. These coffee houses will offer delight, surprise, rest, enlightenment and amusement to a wide variety of users over the course of the day or week.

The first of five such outlets is scheduled to come up at Janakpuri in West Delhi. The Delhi Tourism and Transportation Development Corporation (DTTDC) have already short-listed half a dozen consultants for the project. Under this new concept, a part of the coffee shops would be leased out to a branded coffee chain to attract a wider age group.

These designer coffee home would also have a specialty restaurant, take-away and home delivery counters, counters for branded coffee, music gallery, ATMs, telephone booths, flower shop, office space, cyber café, art gallery, nursery and various kinds of shops and commercial outlets. In addition, the new coffee home will also have an open amphitheatre, library and other such facilities. The concept of coffee homes as a meeting place, using the built ambience and making it a multipurpose usable space, will give you the Flavors of another era.

I certainly don’t know “What you did Last summer” but I can help you in planning your summer and upcoming summers. At least I can inform you the option we Delhiites have.

Recently our Delhi Tourism has tied up with its counterparts in other States to prepare "Discover India'' packages, with the idea to provide various options to Delhiites and those from the adjoining regions to spend their vacations alone or along with their children in the cool environs. These amazing packages will include a mix of pilgrim tourism, a stint in the Himalayas with exciting offerings like para-gliding, trekking and night camping, not to miss a jeep safari to the hilly desert region of Ladakh.

The "Discover India'' offers fascinating experience for those also looking for a pilgrimage. The Delhi Tourism has prepared a five-day package tour to Badrinath adding three more days if the tourists are interested in going to Kedarnath also. Religious places like Haridwar, Rishikesh, Gaurikund, Srinagar would be covered under this project.

For romantics and nature lovers Delhi Tourism with the collaboration with the Himachal Pradesh Tourism Development Corporation brought for you Shimla-Manali-Chandigarh week- long package. Then there is the nine-day option of Shimla-Manali- Dharamsala-Dhalhousie which is an exhaustive tour and covers various parts of the hill State. For the Delhi Dare Devils Delhi Tourism had also one of the most exciting jeep safari package lined up to discover Ladakh.

Special student group packages have also been offered and a number of Delhi schools have already lapped them up and are sending groups to places like Himachal Pradesh and Uttaranchal. Under the package tour for students, arrangements had been made for adventure sports like para-gliding, trekking and mountain climbing. In addition to this, students would also be put up in tented accommodation and given the option of camping at interesting places as part of the offer to promote adventure- related options.

Polishing Hidden Heritage Jems of Delhi

Indian National Trust for Art and Cultural Heritage (INTACH), a nationwide non-profit organization founded to protect the common national heritage, concluded a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the Delhi Government's tourism department on 3rd July, 2008.

The first step will be working towards the long term plan for getting Delhi declared as the World Heritage City. This process will involve the areas from Humanyun's Tomb to Red Fort and area from Nizamuddin to Safdarjung and Qutub Minar all around to develop it as Heritage Tourism Circuit. Under this project government will develop a heritage route connecting certain monuments by designing a road from Red Fort to Humanyun's Tomb and Safdarjung to Qutab Minar. The Government and the INTACH have abided by in principle to protect, conserve, and promote the cherished architectural, environmental and living (social and cultural) heritage resources of the National Capital Territory of Delhi. By undertaking conservation oriented development projects and other related strategies the Government intends to lead to the encryption of Delhi as a World Heritage City by UNESCO. The government will monitor activities to be undertaken by INTACH and provide required support where necessary.

Delhi’s second Diili Haat is all set to make its presence felt in Pitampura. Now north Delhi people don’t need to travel long distance to visit their favorite hang out place. The Delhi Travel & Tourism Development Corporation (DTTDC) inaugurated its second traditional Dilli Haat in Delhi on 29th April, 2008 by Shiela Dikshit, the CM of Delhi.

The Pitampura Haat, like its progenitor at INA market will showcase a kaleidoscopic view of the richness and diversity of Indian handicrafts and artifacts. The market is adorned with mostly ethnic stuff; from different states of India - handicrafts, fabric, baskets, ornaments, and wall-hangings. This is one of the oldest markets of Delhi. Palika Bazaar is also famous as underground AC Bazaar. This was the first time in my three years tenure in Delhi when I visited this market. I must say very chaotic and promiscuous. After Nehru place and Gaffar Market, this is the third best place which is known for electrical goods and software. With its healthy stock of video games, pirated movies, smuggled colognes/deodorants and counterfeit Calvin Klein Sunglasses or Omega watches, this age old market is recluse for students, teenagers and young college students.

Apart from them you can find many tourists. Delhi residents also can be seen there but only to show their Delhi touring relatives this underground air-conditioned market. If you can compromise on the quality you probably can have almost every thing on earth here. You can bargain like hell here. If the shopkeeper ask to pay you 600 Rs/- for a purse, easily you can get it for 100. There are a lot of eating corners also inside the market area. It is advisable to take some one along when you will visit Palika Bazaar. Take along somebody who knows about all the ins and outs of the market or there are chances that you may get lost.

Yesterday I was not at all in the mood or rather i should say i didn't even feel like coming to office(As I wanted to sleep few more hours, then shop and meet one of my old friend who came from Bangalore). He was putting up at Connaught Place(some hotel). So I wanted to meet him somewhere where I could both enjoy and shop. It was quite obvious that we both came out with meeting place in ‘Delhi Haat’. Nestled in the famous INA shopping complex area, it is just 5 miles from Connaught Place. A total exclusive shopping experience in the backdrop of Indian folk culture of every region is some thing nobody wants to miss.

For the people who can die for the ethnic memoirs of India, this place is a heaven on earth. As per my knowledge ace this market has been developed by the Tourist Deptt. of Delhi, to enhance the craftsmanship of our country. From the original Andamanese cane products or phulkari from Punjab or kullu shawls or kanchi silk, you will get some thing or the other exclusive specialty from all the parts of India. Products are here are surprisingly reasonably priced perhaps because the place uniquely avoids the middlemen and is government controlled. I bought a beautiful Bandhani Skirt, One cool Cotton Kurti, where as my friend (Doing all justice to his glutton status) wasted all his money in devouring the Indian delicacies. He virtually went nuts after seeing that almost all state cuisines are represented there by rotation.

In any given day for a small family, outing or ethnic shopping while some one wants to have some good time. This place is one of my favorite places while I want to do some shopping in Delhi and at the same time want to spend some quality time with the people I love.

Being a complete foodie, I was blessed to be here. I can’t live my life out of having air. I need good delicious mouth smacking foods. And honestly I prefer Deshi traditional foods over any junk stuff. Some times my friends pull my legs telling me if it could have been possible I will prefer lassi to Cola even in PVR.

But I don’t mind because they are true mindless freaks. As I was telling you get whatever food you like. Delhi cuisine is known for its variety and spice. Starting from the Punjabi 'Chhole-Bhature', sarson ka saag, Makke di roti, ‘Korma’, 'Kababs', and 'Biriyanis' to south Indian Idli Dosa, Uttapam- you name it you will have it in here.

If you are a devoted foodie, then I can tell you some real good places which you won’t wanna miss for anything. For non-veggies, 'Karim's' in Old Delhi, NFC’s Al Beg are the most coveted destinations. If haven't had Al Beg's 'shorma' yet, that means you haven't tested heaven. Don't forget to try the mouth-watering 'Paranthas' of 'Paranthe wali gali' in Chandni Chowk. For Paranthas another popular joint is Tanku’s near IIT. Udupi, Sarvana Bhavan and Sagar Ratna, Haldiram’s and Bikaner Group offers light and tasty veg foods. Even I like roadside 'Dhabas', eateries, snack counters- which offer wide varieties of delectable cuisines. Papri, Bhalle-Papri, Aloo Tikiki, Gol Gappe, etc. are all-time favorites of mine.

For the sweet dish, (of course being a Bengali) I can vouch for Bengali sweets. Especially 'Roshogullahs' and 'Sandesh', are most palatable for me. You can easily get best of these yummiest sweets in Rasharaj in CR Park Market-2.

But in case, even after reading all this I cant take you in my side. And still you are more of my friends’ kind then you can always satisfy your gluttony with KFC, Mc Donalds, Nirulas and Wimpys, which you can find here almost in every knock and corner of the city.

An Evening at Lajpat Nagar

Ofcourse there is nothing like getting away for the weekend to get your dear ones together. It’s fun to spend time with like minded group of people. For me, celebrating my day of freedom (holiday), are simply sharing time and doing things with friends. Especially, when you are way from your home then your friends become your family. Then, a simple walk in the market, having Chaat or even a window shopping, with your friends become a rewarding experience.

For different reasons, I was not being able to catch up with my friends, for quite some times. This Sunday evening, curtsey to Avinash, we all met in Lajpat Nagar market, near the Ashram Chowk. As usual, as the part of my guest appearance I came late. And after reaching there I realize all of most of my friends came there to do some good window shopping. In our college days too, we always relied on Lajpat Nagar market for fashionable cloths and other general items. Be it any occasion we head for this market to get some thing for ourselves.

Not only us I have seen and heard (from my Delhi NCR friends) that this market is always a hot favorite with the middle class and the students sections. Due to its prime location and proximity to the areas like Ashram, Maharani Bagh, East of Kailash and the Friends Colony, this market, is a popular shopping place for Delhiites. Closed on Monday, Lajatpat Nagar central market will offer you shops which have one of the finest bridal and festive collection as a very reasonable rate.

In this one-stop market, you will find a wide range of items staring form ethnic Indian wear to the latest western style clothing. Household items to footwear, all trendy accessories, bags, jewellery, leather, silver ware- Think of anything and you will be able to get it here.. From 35 rupees fixed clothing shop to exclusive premium shops- this place have something for everyone.

Here I usually love to shop till I drop. I can put my bargaining skills to test. Like me if you are too love to wear cotton suits and then buy some great stuff from the shop Sabhyata. For me another prime attraction of this market is the Mehndiwalas I love to see my hands adorn with beautiful henna designs. For one of my dear friends the main attraction is mouth watering delicacies, which the eateries of this market offer. Personally I like the steaming Momos sold by the Tibetan ladies here near the shop Gokul’s.

So after lots of shopping, hogging delicious street foods and having a gala time with friends, when I was returning home I was thinking about only one thing- I will be back soon.

Everybody says first impression is the last impression- For me it was love at very first sight. When I came to this city about three years ago, I fell for this city. The traditional mogul appeal, colonial aura and ultra modern accessories, coupled up with warm hospitality of its dwellers will compel you to love this city with out even trying very hard. Its 3000 years old history has seen much historical and political turmoil. Be it cultural, traditional, spiritual, architectural, contemporary or historical, Delhi have all the colors in its stunning Rainbow. Through out the year, this mini-India wears the attire of a Dulhan. With imperial landmarks, warm people, colorful bazaars, holly shrines etc. while you are here, you won’t be able to get a day, which is not different. This metropolitan city with a cosmopolitan outlook will refreshingly show you almost every facet of Indian life. With a strange mix of the traditional and modern Indian lifestyle, this city welcomes every one with open arms. One thing for sure I have completely lost myself. Its true I am in love with this city.
